This course teaches participants on how to perform a time series analysis of sea ice data. Data on sea ice extent from the Artic region is used in the course. Participants will learn and apply statistical methods to understand the distribution of and trends, if any, in sea ice extent in the Arctic region.

Learn to use sea surface temperature (SST) data to define and analyse marine heatwaves (MHWs) in the Mediterranean region. 

In this course you are introduced to R-Instat, its functionalities and how it can be used to compare satellite data with station data. R-Instat is a free, general statistics software, based on R, with special facilities for working with station data and comparing station data with satellite data. Example station and satellite data are provided, but you are also encouraged to try with your own data. The course is designed with satellite data in mind, but the ideas apply to other sources of gridded climatic data in NetCDF format.

The key objective of this Workshop is to instruct active and future users from National Meteorological Services, Regional Climate Centres and from research institutions primarily from EUMETSAT member states and WMO RA VI in the use of EUMETSAT climate products for operational climate monitoring and climate research.

Course setup

Participants will complete an online phase during which they will

• engage with the concept of satellite based climate monitoring
• be introduced to EUMETSAT's climate products
• install free and open software tools to be used during the classroom phase
• get a first introduction to these software
• identify which data will be most applicable to their work and ideally download (some of) these data
• design a small project that will be completed during the workshop in Pretoria

The key objective of this Workshop is to instruct active and future users from National Meteorological Services and from research institutions in the use of EUMETSAT's satellite based climate monitoring products for operational climate monitoring and climate research.

The online phase covers background information about the data, data formats and tools, that is needed to successfully work with satellite based climate information and specifically with the products that are subject of this course.

This course will mainly focus on CM SAF data and free software tools (such R - see http://www.cmsaf.eu/tools/ for further information). During the workshop, the participants will have the opportunity to explore the use of CM SAF data in their daily work.

During the online phase (20 February - 3 March) participants will design a small project in which they will identify which data will be most applicable to their work.

The projects will be finalised during the workshop in Krakow (20 - 24 March), which will also include supporting presentations and group work on the application of satellite data to climate monitoring. During the workshop, the participants will have the opportunity to explore the use of CM SAF data in their daily work.

CM SAF data and free software tools, such as climate data operators (cdo), R and potentially QGIS) will be used.
