Atmospheric Composition [O3]

The 2023 Dust Training School aims to build capacity and improve skills in aerosol detection and monitoring for users from (1) research and academia, and (2) meteorological and transnational agencies, with a regional focus on Europe, North Africa, Middle East and Sahelian Africa. However, attendance is open to all countries.

National services are at the forefront of gathering early-warning, forecasting, and monitoring fires, together with preparedness actions. Earth observation data feeds monitoring and forecasting, by generating specific products and datasets tailored to support each phase of the observation and management of a wildfire event. 

This three-day hybrid workshop aims to:

  • discover and train on existing and new earth observation products;
  • learn from national services' activities and users' networks;
  • discuss needs and priorities for a better user guidance and preparation.

The Training School and workshop on Aerosol Detection and Monitoring aims to provide an awareness of state-of-the-art satellite-based and model-based products and offer opportunities to learn more about the applicability and the effectiveness of the respective products.

An additional full session of the school jointly organized by EUMETSATBarcelona Supercomputing Center, WMO-SDS with the support of ECWMF-CAMS, and ACTRIS.

  • Phase I (25 and 27 January) - Training School which is open to all
  • Phase II (31 January- 2 February) - Practical Workshop by application only.


The Training School and workshop on Aerosol Detection and Monitoring aims to provide an awareness of state-of-the-art satellite-based and model-based products and offer opportunities to learn more about the applicability and the effectiveness of the respective products.

This school is jointly organized by EUMETSATBarcelona Supercomputing Center, WMO-SDS with the support of ECWMF-CAMS, and ACTRIS.

This school is offered in two parts:

  • Phase I (9 - 12 Nov) - Training School which is open to all
  • Phase II (15 - 17 Nov & 22-24 Nov) - Practical Workshop by application only.


The Fourth ACAM Training School will be focused on Atmospheric Chemistry and Aerosols in the Asian Monsoon region using Satellite and Model data. The school is fully on-line and has the goal to enhance the capacity of early career scientists in the areas of atmospheric composition data analysis using satellite remote sensing, model and analysis products. The training school will provide lectures and tutorials on using the latest and comprehensive global datasets on atmospheric composition.

Fire emissions pose serious concerns for public health, natural resources, ecosytems and climate change. In turn, a changing climate with prolonged and more frequent heatwaves, changes in atmospheric regimes, and land aridity increases the risk of fires and the regional extent and duration of the fire season. This leads to an increased need for National Services to provide and communicate about fire risk, nowcasting and impacts to a wide range of users. Some of these needs are tackled with dedicated Copernicus services for emergency management and monitoring the atmosphere at the global and Europe-wide scale. Services such as the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), which also contributes to the Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS), a joint initiative between Copernicus, GEO and NASA, provide a comprehensive view and evaluation of fire regimes and at global level including selected data from satellite. Use of emissions from Global Fire assimilation System (GFAS) is implemented in GWIS. Satellite observations can respond to these needs thanks to their great potential for nowcasting, decision support and providing key information on the fire impact assessment.

The European Space Agency (ESA), the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) with the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) are organising a second joint training course on Atmospheric Composition with a focus on air quality and data interoperability.

The school will be fully on-line with lectures, debates and practical sessions. We aim at fully involving participants in an interactive way.

An online expert consultation on preparing users for present and upcoming Atmospheric Composition Satellite Data held in collaboration with CAMS-ECMWF and aiming to:

1. Foster engagement of existing and new users of atmospheric composition for applications and services
2. Raise awareness of datasets, existing and emerging applications using existing and upcoming satellite datasets
3. Verify user preparation elements and set up a series of needs and priorities

  3. Fostering participants driven personal and team projects

Dates: 4 - 8 Nov 2019, Cluj-Napoca, Romania

This is the online training phase of the Third ACAM Training School (24-25 June 2019) will be focused on Satellite Observations and Analysis of Atmospheric Chemistry and Aerosols in the Asian Monsoon region. The school is held in conjunction with the Fourth ACAM Workshop (26-28 June) in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).

The specific goal of the training school is to enhance capacity of early career scientists in the areas of atmospheric composition data analysis using satellite remote sensing, model and analysis products. The 2-day training school will provide lectures and tutorials on using latest and comprehensive global datasets on atmospheric composition. Participants will develop small-scale science projects to apply these datasets in their area of research interests. 

During this online phase, participants will get familiar with the datasets and discuss their projects with trainers.

Dates: 24 - 25 June 2019, Malaysia
