The key objective of this Workshop is to instruct active and future users from National Meteorological Services and from research institutions in the use of EUMETSAT's satellite based climate monitoring products for operational climate monitoring and climate research.

Workshop setup

This is a blended training, composed of an online phase and a classroom phase.

The online phase covers background information about the data, data formats and tools, that is needed to successfully work with satellite based climate information and specifically with the products that are subject of this course.

The classroom phase in Riga will focus on practical exercises. Most of the time in Riga will be spend to work on mini projects. Participants are encouraged to define their own project during the online phase.

This course will mainly focus on CM SAF data and free software tools (such R - see http://www.cmsaf.eu/tools/ for further information). During the workshop, the participants will have the opportunity to explore the use of CM SAF data in their daily work.

Workshop in Riga, Latvia: 14 - 18 May 2018

The Pretoria workshop is joinly offered by EUMETSAT and CM SAF and will include project-based work with supporting presentations and group work on the application of satellite data to climate monitoring. We will mainly use CM SAF data and free software tools (such as R - see http://www.cmsaf.eu/tools/ for further information; and R Instat). During the workshop, the participants will have the opportunity to explore the use of CM SAF data in their daily work.

Workshop in Pretoria, South Africa: 20 - 24 November 2017

The key objective of this Workshop is to instruct active and future users from National Meteorological Services and from research institutions in the use of CM SAF products for operational climate monitoring and climate research.

During the online phase (20 February - 3 March) participants will design a small project in which they will identify which data will be most applicable to their work.

The projects will be finalised during the workshop in Krakow (20 - 24 March), which will also include supporting presentations and group work on the application of satellite data to climate monitoring. During the workshop, the participants will have the opportunity to explore the use of CM SAF data in their daily work.

CM SAF data and free software tools, such as climate data operators (cdo), R and potentially QGIS) will be used.
