The Use of Satellite Data for Climate Services in Europe

    Online Phase: 28 January - 8 February 2019

Classroom Phase: 25 February - 1 March 2019, Krakow, Poland

This 2 weeks online phase is designed for you to:

    • study the concept of satellite based climate monitoring
    • get an overview of the satellite based climate data we will be working with in the classroom
    • learn where an how to access/download these data
    • to prepare your laptop for the classroom by installing software tools will be working with in the classroom
    • to get an impression on these software tools by working through the tutorials and excercises provided
    • define the mini project you will work on during the classroom phase. This will be done in close collaboration with the course instructors.

This is a self learning environment, which allows you to learn at your own speed! However, there are several life sessions where you can discuss questions with the instructors and your course mates. Feel free to join in! Besides that, you can use the course forum at any time to get in touch with course mates, instructors and discuss questions and comments.

Most of the content provided in this online course is to read and to watch/listen. There are 8 active tasks/exercises you are expected to do during this online phase. They are highlighted in red.

Besides these tasks you can check what you have learned about the concept of satellite based climate monitoring in the Quiz that is provided in section 8.

After you have worked through the content of this online phase, you should be able to:

    Satellite-based Climate Data

In the context of climate monitoring, climate data are collected to

    1. document the status of the climate system and
    2. classify the current state of the climate system in the long term. In this section you find background information on climate data and, more specifically, on those climate data that can be derived from satellite observations.

Several sources of satellite-based climate data are available:

These data are made available free of charge.

The presentations below provide you with information about

    • the concept of Essential Climate Variables
    • the retrieval of geophysical variables from satellite measurements, based on the examples of solar irradiation
    • the concept of
      • (thematic) climate data records ((T)CDR's)
      • operational / environmental data records (EDR's) / interim climate data records (ICDR's)
      • fundamental climate data records (FCDR's)
as used in the context of the CM SAF
    • the CM SAF and what it does

CM SAF provides (long term) climate data sets and operational (near real time) climate products for different climate variables. This section provides you with an overview on what is available from the CM SAF and how to order CM SAF data. For more information please refer to the CM SAF web user interface (http://wui.cmsaf.eu).

The main objectives of Atmospheric Composition SAF (AC SAF, https://acsaf.org/index.html)  is to process, archive, validate and disseminate near real-time (NRT) data products, including e.g. total columns of different trace gases such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3) and sulphur dioxide (SO2), tropospheric column of NO2, UV-radiation, aerosol index as well as ozone profiles. Important applications of AC SAF data are e.g. monitoring global air quality or UV-radiation reaching the Earth's surface. In this section you will learn about AC SAF data records, what kind of studies they are useful for, and how you can access the data.

    AC SAF data records

AC SAF provides Level 3 Data Records of selected variables (https://acsaf.org/datarecord_access.html). For this course Data Records of NO2 and water vapour are used.

Both parameters are retrieved from GOME-2 instrument onboard Metop-A and Metop-B satellites. Both Data Records are stored as global monthly means. The file format is NetCDF.

    Product Algorithm version Satellite Availability
    Level 3 NO2 1.0

    02/2007- 08/2017
    Level 3 NO2  1.0 Metop-B

Visualising and handling AC SAF data records

There are several ways to visualise AC SAF data records. The easiest way is to use Panoply, where you can visualise one file at the time. The AC SAF data records are stored as monthly mean files. In  monthly mean netCDF NO2 files there are variables

    • "latitude": 1d vector (length 720). Values range from -89.75 to 89.75 at 0.25 deg steps
    • "longitude": 1d vector (length 1440). Values range from -179.75 to 179.75 at 0.25 deg step
    • "PRODUCT/NO2trop", Tropospheric NO2 column content,  2d matrix (1440x720). Values are given in molec/cm-2
    • "PRODUCT/NO2trop_err"; error associated with NO2trop, 2d matrix (1440x720)

In monthly mean  H2O files there are variables

    • "latitude": 1d vector (length 360). Values range from -89.5 to 89.5 at 0.5 deg steps
    • "longitude": 1d vector (length 720). Values range from -179.5 to 179.5 at 0.5 deg step
    • "PRODUCT/tcwv", Total column water vapour content,  2d matrix (720x360). Values are given in kg/m-2
    • "PRODUCT/tcwv_err"; error associated with tcwv, 2d matrix (720x360)

Climate Data Store is the access to the climate information of the Climate Change Copernicus Service (C3S) implemented by ECMWF.

The CDS collects datasets for all Climate Essential Climate Variables for:

    • Satellite
    • Reanalysis
    • In-situ (on-going)
    • In addition CDS provide access to the seasonal forecast datasets and climate projections

The access to the data  is free upon registration

Tutorials are available in the C3S Learning zone upon registration.

    Note that:

Most datasets can be retrieved in NetCDF format. If you download data from the CDS, we strongly advise to chose NetCDF.

ERA5 Reanalyis is the new generation of reanalysis from ECMWF and are available through the CDS as hourly data. A careful check of the expected size is then necessary.

One way is to extract them via the toolbox - here a python routine to upload in the toolbox for global 2m temperature

Most of the time during the classroom will be reserved for working on your own mini project.

Now that you have learned about the data and software tools, please think about a small project that you would like to work on during the classroom. If you would like to combine gridded satellite data and station data, you are welcome to bring station data to the classroom.

Share you ideas for a mini project with your course mates, if you wish and post it to this forum!

Early during of the classroom phase you will be asked to present the idea for your mini project. Please prepare one or two slides to explain what you are planning to do. You can upload the slides to this forum.

Of course you are welcome to partner with other course mates and work in teams.
