The intent of the CIMSS Satellite Blog is to showcase examples of some of the meteorological satellite images and products that are available to (or created by) scientists and researchers at NOAA’s Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), located at the University of Wisconsin – Madison’s Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) . Interesting and/or educational satellite images that are relevant to current weather events will be shown and discussed.

The majority of the satellite images posted on this blog are from one or more of the following sources:

1.the SSEC Data Center, processed using McIDAS
2.AWIPS workstations at CIMSS
3.the SSEC MODIS Direct Broadcast and SSEC MODIS Today sites
4.the CIMSS Tropical Cyclones site

Most of the image animations are created using the Animated GIF format or the Java applet AniS, but QuickTime is used for some of the longer (or larger file size) animations (see additional information on the Java and QuickTime animations).
