  • Fire Danger Near Real Time Monitoring in the Mediterranean region

Webinar with Carla Barroso (EUMETSAT), Federico Fierli (EUMETSAT) and Celia Gouveia (IPMA-LSA SAF)

    20 April 2022, 12:00 UTC | Register here

The fire season over the Mediterranean region typically starts in May-June.  Meteorological factors play a crucial role in the setting and spreading of wildfires and they are also an important factor in the resulting fire severity. How to interpret the available satellite products and anticipate severe fire occurrence? In this short course, conducted by Carla Barroso, Federico Fierli (EUMETSAT) and Celia Gouveia (IPMA-LSA SAF), participants will go through:

    • An introduction about how satellite data are important in the fire monitoring process.
    • A demonstration on how the LSA SAF Fire Risk products can be used as a warning tool to extreme fire probability in the Mediterranean region.
    • Accessing and visualizing fire risk products from the LSA SAF using a demo on Jupyter notebooks. This is part of a wider workflow for wildfire monitoring and forecast developed by Sabrina Szeto and Julia Wagemann for EUMETSAT and Copernicus.
