Operational Satellite Oceanography Workshop (2023)

In response to needs identified by the Third International Operational Satellite Oceanography Symposium in June 2023, the hosts (EUMETSAT, NOAA, KHOA and KIOST) are convening a follow-up Operational Satellite Oceanography Workshop which will offer further training on how to exploit operational marine Earth observation data streams. The training event, which will take place online from 27 to 29 November, will give an overview of satellite products from the partners as well as provide guidance and tutorials on using available tools and software packages to facilitate data analysis, automated data access and processing and product validation.

The EUMETSAT Supporting Marine Earth Observation Applications (SMA) training course, conducted in partnership with the Oceanography & Earth Observation Group of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, will share knowledge, skills, resources and code so attendees are able to independently access and process data from the EUMETSAT product catalogue for their marine work-flows and applications. The SMA course will support data streams from EUMETSATs Copernicus marine missions (Sentinel-3; Sentinel-6) and derived downstream products, those derived from Copernicus supporting missions, and those made available by the Ocean and Sea-Ice Satellite Application Facility (OSI-SAF).

The purpose of this EUMETSAT Copernicus Marine Data Stream (CMDS) training workshop is to share knowledge, skills, resources and code so that attendees are independently able to access and process Sentinel-3 data for their marine workflows and applications.

This course will offer an overview of the operational aspects of the Copernicus Marine Data Stream (CMDS) and the NOAA CoastWatch program. Topics covered will include ocean satellite data products (SST, ocean colour, salinity, altimetry, winds, …), how CMEMS assimilates data into operational models and Level 4 multi sensor products, Data download APIs and ways in which data retrieval and processing can be scripted, and an overview of the ERDDAP data platform and CoastWatch data portal.

This Essentials Pack for Ocean Applications contains all the background, technical information, and practical tools needed for you to skilfully and independently select the right kind of data for your marine applications,  access and visualise ocean colour, temperature and sea surface height data in SNAP, and process said data using Python Jupyter Notebooks.

In this Essentials Pack, you will find core modules as well as extra content, which you can complete at your own pace. We have provided a number of instructional videos, written documentation, code, and quizzes to help you along your learning process.

Working with marine satellite data often involves using large numbers of individually large data files. The applications for these data are also broad, and range from exploratory and research-led projects, to routine and operational analysis for more commercial applications. As such, there are many tools available to work with marine satellite data. Here we provide technical guidance for installation of two commonly used tools by the marine remote sensing community, namely: SNAP and Jupyter Notebooks (Python).

The current suite of Earth Observation satellites offer access to an unprecedented amount of information on the marine environment. Concurrently, there is a growing demand in research, governance, and commercial marine sectors, for personnel who can use this data. Training providers across these sectors is essential for maximizing the utility of this data and building necessary capacity. This course offers participants the opportunity to work with other trainers to incorporate the use of Copernicus marine data from EUMETSAT in to their own educational activities. Participants will learn how to use open access resources available through EUMETSAT and the Copernicus programme, and co-develop their own resources with a network of fellow participants and trainers from IODE, EUMETSAT and CMEMS. The course will delivered online only.

The purpose of the event is to develop skills in using EUMETSAT and related data to marine weather forecasting, for professionals in operational Services across African marine communities.

Online phase: March 2020

The purpose of these workshops is to develop skills in using data from EUMETSAT’s Copernicus Marine Data Stream (CMDS) for oceanographic applications. We will focus on the application of data from Sentinel-3.

After the workshops, participants will be able to:

1. Name data and products provided in the CMDS with relevance to their work (variables, timeliness, resolution, data format).
2. Access and download the data and products provided in the CMDS using CODA, EUMETSAT Data archive, and EumetCAST.
3. Know how to work with CMDS data using Jupyter Notebooks (Python) and the Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP).
   
4. Use data and products from the CMDS for your own work needs and purposes.

On this moodle platform, students from different countries can train their international competencies by collaborating in different projects, exchanging ideas and doing self-study.

In the first project, students from the weather services in South Africa and Germany will work together on the topics Arctic and Antarctica. The project will start in September 2019, with the beginning of the largest-scale Arctic research expedition of all time. The research icebreaker Polarstern will spend one year drifting through the Arctic Ocean and being trapped in the ice.
